FAVE RECAP: 12 things you need to know about tech and social this week

Published by:

Time for your FAVE recap and mine… It’s what’s hot in tech and social.

Listen, I know you’re busy. When I first started this blog I considered making the tagline, “Putting in the man hours so you don’t have to.” I enjoy doing this research and I want to make it as easy as possible for you to always be in-the-know on all things social. If you read nothing else this week, this run down will keep your social and tech IQ above the rest. Rest easy, busy one, I’ve got your back.

Go ahead and copy and paste your favorite links and send them to your boss, co-workers, peers. They’ll remember (in case they forgot) what a rockstar you are. (Or you can always forward a copy of this post.)

FAVE BADGE: 3 days left to win a @foursquare badge for your city #visitus

Published by:

Calling Harold Hill! (The one at the end of the movie who leads 76 trombones. Not the greedy one who makes Marian cry.) Ready to lead the big celebration for your city on foursquare? Last week they announced the #visitUS city badge contest, inspired by this: White House

Love this idea.

What do you have to do? Make a list of the best spots in your city, submit to foursquare on twitter or with this form and they’ll pick three to turn into foursquare city badges!

How to make a list  for your town:

  1. Create a list at foursquare.com/lists, and make sure it has your town and the #visitUS hashtag in the name.
  2. Add 20-30 of your town’s best places. Include a variety of spots, from restaurants and bars, to parks, monuments, and local businesses.
  3. When you’re done, get your friends to follow the list (or even help you make it) by sharing it on foursquare, Twitter, and Facebook.
  4. Share your list on twitter with hashtags #4sq and #visitUS, or submit it using this form

You have until midnight this Friday to tweet your list with the #visitUS and #4sq hashtags (you can also use this form). Good luck!

Here are a few places that already have city badges.

FAVE IFTTT: 7 social tasks that will blow your mind

Published by:

Mind. Blown.

I heart IFTTT so much that it now has it’s own category here on FAVES. That’s a big deal. Rrrrrrrrrrright.

  1. Let the web be your virtual umbrella so you’re not caught in the rain. You can set up a Gmail recipe to alert you if it’s raining in the morning (or if it’s snowing). Now to figure out with umbrella goes with that outfit. (Or you can set up a text message to remind you to put the plants in the garage if it’s below a certain temperature. You’re on your own there. [To create this recipe you need Weather Channel and Gmail accounts.]
  2. Ever worry about the photos you upload to Facebook getting lost (or ending up in Zuck’s secret stash)? There’s a recipe for that. Set up a Dropbox folder to house your Facebook photos after you upload them. [To create this recipe you need Facebook and Dropbox accounts.] NOTE: You could revise this recipe to work with your cloud storage of choice.
  3. Want to get out of a really bad date? While I’d love to be available 24/7 to help you, now your phone can do it for you. Use the “text to escape” recipe to send yourself this message (or write a new one for yourself): “Congratulations! You have successfully planned your escape! Right now your friend is in dire need of…well SOMETHING! And it’s up to you to get there! Now! Hurry! Because it’s not like you want to get away from someone else, it’s just that you have to be somewhere else very soon. Now fly!” [To create this recipe you need a SMS channel and a mobile phone.]
  4. Feel like you neve have time read all the starred content in Gmail? It’s probably because you haven’t built it into your schedule. Use this recipe to schedule time in your calendar to read your super starred emails. [To create this recipe you need Gmail and Google Calendar.]
  5. Want to publish that killer Google+ update to Facebook? This. [To create this recipe you need Google+ and Facebook accounts.]
  6. Create a recipe to email someone each time you use a specific tag in a WordPress post. For example if you mention your mom, you would tag her and an email with a link to the post would be sent. You need to edit this recipe as it’s currently personalized for another user. [To create this recipe you need WordPress and Gmail accounts.]
  7. Enhance your Google Calendar with your Foursquare checkins. Just pop this recipe in the oven and you’re set–you’ll always know where you were. [To create this recipe you need Google Calendar and Foursquare accounts.]

REMINDER:

What is ifttt? It essentially puts the internet to work for you by creating tasks that fit this simple structure: if this then that. You either create your own “recipe” or use one another user created. A recipe might be “if I post a video to YouTube then a link to the video should go to a Dropbox folder.” Yes, ifttt helps you do all this and more.

In order to use IFTTT, you’ll need to do a few simple steps:
  • Sign up for ifttt beta;
  • Click the confirmation link sent to you via email.

FAVE WEBSITE & APP: Find top trending photos from across the web. Hello Skylines.

Published by:

Photo sharing online is all the rage. Take it from me, a non-recovering Instagram addict, I know what I’m talking about. I’m so busy taking photos that I wish someone would do all the work to find best photos that fit my interests. Wait a minute. Helloooooooooo Skylines — “a personalized stream of photos that it thinks you’ll like, regardless of who took them.”

What I like even more is the ability to see top trending photos on their homepage. More, please.

And if you like lists like I do, the team shares the top 10 photos from across the web on their blog. I’m all OVER this, well actually Justin Bieber is. He consistently scores in the top spots.

How does it work? To sign up for Skylines you connect Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare accounts. Then the behind-the-scenes Skylines mojo takes over. A few moments later, photos that should interest you based on what you’ve shared online.

Want it on the go? You’re in luck: Skylin.es for Droid. Skylin.es for iPhone.

For some reason this makes me want to watch Sleepless in Seattle.
