FAVE HOW TO: Predict what online content will go viral

Published by:

Why are certain pieces of online content more viral than others? That’s what Jonah Berger’s and Katherine L. Milkman’s recently released research shows us.

The research pair looked at data from all New York Times articles published over a three-month period and how emotion shapes virality. Most striking? POSITIVE CONTENT IS MORE VIRAL THAN NEGATIVE CONTENT. It’s not a coincidence that over the years I’ve been more likely to share content like JK Wedding Dance Entrance versus something depressing or overall negative. Looks like I’m not alone, although content that provokes negative emotion is still more viral than content that provokes sadness.

In fact, Berger and Milkman specifically mention that:

Content that evokes high-arousal positive (awe) or negative (anger or anxiety) emotions is more viral. Content that evokes low-arousal, or deactivating, emotions (e.g., sadness) is less viral.

and

Marketers should try to evoke the three A’s: Awe, Anger and Anxiety: “Content that evokes high arousal emotions, regardless of their valiance, is more viral.”

Their 15-page research piece in the Journal of Marketing Research ultimately shows why people share content and how to design more effective viral marketing campaigns. To get the upper hand on your competitors, you should read it in its entirety.

FAVE READER QUESTION: What’s your fave viral content of all time?

FAVE ANNOUNCEMENT: Goodbye Chicago, hello Las Vegas — I’m joining Team Tracky as their new Chief Evangelist

Published by:

Here it is my FAVE family, friends and colleagues, an announcement I’ve been waiting to share. It’s the chapter of life’s adventure myself, along with the Tracky team, are excited to share with you:

PR and social media consultant Sarah Evans (@PRsarahevans) announced (and tweeted) she’s joining Tracky, a Las Vegas-based startup, as the new Chief Evangelist and moving her family to the City of Lights.

Tracky is an open social collaboration tool that Evans believes has the potential to change the way we work together both online and off. This isn’t just press release kind of talk either. It’s already working for her. She’s fully embraced the product to do everything from changing the way she engages with audiences, receive pitches for her blog, Sarah’s Faves and even plan her family’s move to Vegas.

Evans originally joined Tracky’s advisory board and realized the HUGE potential of the product. She wanted a bigger role in the company and co-founders David (@davidgosse) and Jennifer (@jennifergosse) Gosse couldn’t say no to her puppy dog-like begging.

As Chief Evangelist, Evans’ role is a mashup of all her favorite things (which happen to be Tracky’s as well). She will continue blogging, speaking, attending tech events and consulting all over the country. When she’s in the fabulous Las Vegas office she’ll be in-house PR counsel and produce a new web show, Track Stars.

Want to send Sarah and the Tracky team your well wishes, jokes and quippy remarks? Use hashtag #ontracky.

As one of Evans’ best friends, Lindsey Brach said, “You would work for a company with a smiley face as their logo.” It’s true. Tracky makes meaningful connections and productive collaborations on a daily basis.

Need to get stuff done? You might enjoy Tracky. Go ahead and give it a try. We’re not the only ones who like it. They just won first place for “best web app” at Future Insights Live, judged by super smart peeps like Jason Calacanis — @jason.

At Tracky, we don’t want our community members to be humorless doer-drones; we want them to express themselves, be themselves, create a portfolio of projects that represents who they are, and feel empowered by the Tracky community to get amazing things done.

Tracky: Connect. Collaborate. Done.
Tracky is an online open social collaboration platform that encompasses to-do lists, live chat, calendars, task management, people and project discovery, social accountability, cloud-based storage and more.

.@IwearYourShirt, @PRsarahevans and @Tracky are giving away a NEW MacBook Pro (2012)

Published by:

Calling all Apple fanboys and girls! It’s pretty likely that the new MacBook Pro 2012 will be announced this June at WWDC. Want to be among the first to get one? There’s a giveaway for that.

UPDATE! We are extending the giveaway. Woot! You can now enter until Apple releases info about the new MacBook Pro.

I’m teaming up with the charming marketing wiz, Jason Sadler of @iwearyourshirt to give away the new MacBook Pro 2012 and spread the word about an online tool that will help to organize your life. It’s not too good to be true. It is true.

Jason and I are crazy inundated with emails, information, tasks and our personal lives — just like you. We teamed up to challenge one another to stop the insanity and get on track. Enter Tracky.

Tracky is a social collaboration platform and their online and mobile platform is, well, a game changer.

(I’m not the only one who thinks so. They just won first place for “best web app” at Future Insights Live, judged by super smart peeps like Jason Calacanis — @jason).

I’m constantly looking for better systems to get things done (GTD for the productivity enthusiasts out there). When CEO of Tracky, David Gosse (@davidgosse), demoed it for me, I was smitten. My reaction? This is project management for people who hate project management (or productivity apps, or simple to do lists, or whatever). Why? Because it’s not ONLY about a faster, simpler and mobile way of getting things done, it’s also about social collaboration – that is, finding people who are the best at what they do and being able to connect and collaborate with them. I need this to schedule my life, curate ideas and share information with my social circles and find other people I want to work with.

(We even used Tracky to plan this giveaway — down to the last, tiny detail.)

And now, that “little” giveaway I mentioned…

This giveaway will award a random participant with the nerdtasticness that is going to be the MacBook Pro 2012 AND it’s going to help Tracky get users, followers and spread the message of a better way to collaborate. Just enter the Rafflecopter giveaway below. The more actions you take, the more entries you get, increasing your chances of winning the MacBook Pro 2012.

The giveaway closes on May 23, 2012.

ULTIMATE GIVEAWAY: Win an #iPad3 from @Tracky and @sarahsfaves

Published by:

You read it right, we’re starting off giveaways with a bang here on Sarah’s Faves. My FAVE folks at Tracky are hooking one lucky reader up with a brand new iPAD 3. ‘Cause that’s how I roll.

Apple is scheduled to make an announcement about the iPad 3’s (or whatever it will officially be called) features and release date any moment. At least let’s hope that’s their announcement. Because I love great new tech and because it’s for a good cause, I’m giving away a free iPad 3 to one fortuitous winner in three weeks!

The cause? Tracky is a startup. Who doesn’t want to help out a startup? Especially when it’s this awesome.

It’s a social collaboration platform and their online and mobile platform is, well, a game changer. Let me tell you why.

You could listen to me whine about my busy days or you could just try Tracky out for yourself. It’s near and dear to my heart. Why? Because I’m now on its Advisory Board (full disclosure). I think this can not only make me more productive as an individual and as a social collaborator, I think it can help your life too. See, I do care.

Now to the good stuff. That iPad 3 stuff…

This giveaway will award a random participant with the awesomeness that is going to be the iPad 3 AND it’s going to help Tracky get users, followers and spread the message of a better way to collaborate. Plus, you can follow my SarahsFaves group on Tracky to learn more. I’ll regularly post public “tracks” with information and research. To get started, just enter the Rafflecopter giveaway below. The more actions you take, the more entries you get, increasing your chances of winning the iPad 3.

UPDATE: Congratulations to Annette Skeans of Las Vegas, winner of the new iPad!

And remember, it’s a social good cause we’re contributing to here. So action-away and sign up for Tracky! They might be somewhat early-stage but I really think they’re going big places. And in the meantime, I’m simplifying my personal, professional and social life in a single platform, and finding out about groups and people that I want to connect with.

Geektastic stuff, eh?

FAVE RESOURCE: A #blogger’s must have for running contests, challenges and promotions

Published by:

Using Rafflecopter to run contests, challenges or promotions integrated with social media from your blog simplifies an otherwise arduous process. Doesn’t hurt that it’s free.

Launched to the public last December, Rafflecopter has amassed quite an adoption rate most recently celebrating 100,000 giveaways created. I know you’re short on time, so let’s get to it.

What does it do? Rafflecopter is a platform that allows you to simply create, run, and enter online giveaways and sweepstakes. Readers can easily enter by connecting with Facebook or using their email address. You announce the prize and select what people need to do to enter (e.g. like this post). It works in the updated editor of blogger, on self-hosted wordpress blogs, typepad, html websites, and facebook via a static iframe.

I’m not a gambling kind of a gal, but if I was I’d say you could create a contest in less than five minutes. Try me…

To create a contest enter the name, the prize(s), select how people can enter, pick start and end times and include your terms and conditions. Done. If all that seems like too much work, there is even a handy dandy template. After you’ve created the contest you can either host it on your blog or embed on a Facebook page with an iframe. You can even share your widget code (that sounds kind of dirty) with other bloggers for them to share on their sites.

So you say to me, “Sarah?”

“Yes, FAVES reader?”

“I created that easy contest, now how do I select a winner? In the past I had to do all that manually.”

Not anymore.

HOW TO select and announce a winner:

    1. Once the giveaway ends, go to the ‘moderate/pick a winner’ page and click ‘add a winner’.
    2. Take the winner’s name, email, and IP address, and open up the grid by clicking on ‘show list’.
    3. Verify that the chosen winner completed the mandatory entry option(s) as well as the entry option they were chosen for correctly by searching for their name, email, and IP address.
    4. If the winner(s) chosen can be verified that they entered correctly, great! If the entry isn’t valid, delete their name from add a winner list and pick a new winner.
    5. When you’re done choosing your winner(s), click the ‘announce button to display the winner’s name(s) on the widget.

Guess what? I like them so much I’m going to start using them for fun challenges right here on Sarah’s FAVES. Get ready to win some cool stuff.

FYI: If you’re going to run a promotion on Facebook, familiarize yourself with their Promotions Guidelines.
