Top 18 social networks who have joined the 100 million (and more) users club

The best of the best social networks have numbers that are difficult to comprehend. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Google+ have more users than the entire population of the United States. All top six social networks have more users than the combined total of pet dogs in the U.S., Canada, Western Europe, Brazil and China (estimated 262 million pet dogs).

So, just how do the world’s top social networks stack up? Here are the top 18 who have broken the 100 million plus mark:

  1. Facebook: 1.06 billion monthly active users, 680 million mobile users
  2. YouTube: 1 billion users
  3. Twitter: 500 million total users, more than 200 million active users
  4. Google+: 343 million active users
  5. Shazam: 300 million users
  6. Skype: 280 million users
  7. LinkedIn: 200 million users
  8. Soundcloud: 180 million monthly users
  9. Pandora: 175 million registered users
  10. Viber: 175 million users
  11. Tumblr: 170 million users, 100 million blogs
  12. SoundHound: 130 million users
  13. Paypal: 117 million users
  14. Dropbox: 100+ million users
  15. Instagram: 100 million users
  16. Ebay: 100 million active users
  17. WhatsApp: 100 million users
  18. Tango: 100 million users

And, a few well on their way:

Flickr: 87 million users
Yelp: 78 million users
WordPress: 74 million blogs
Pinterest: 48.7 million users

Study shows Americans’ social media habits now account for 18 percent of time spent online

A recent study done by the folks at Morrison & Foerster on Americans’ social media habits shows social media now accounts for 18 percent of time spent online. (tweet this)

In addition that little doozy, the study found:

  • The amount of time the average person spent monthly on social networking more than doubled between 2006 and 2011 – from 2.7 hours to 6.9 hours (tweet this)
  • More than half of TV viewers are multi-tasking in front of the tube: 61% of viewers surf the Internet while watching TV; 29% use Facebook while in front of the TV (tweet this)
  • The fastest growing segments of social networking users are men of all ages and people over 55 years old – both groups grew by more than 9% between July 2010 and October 2011. (tweet this)
  • Facebook is the undisputed leader among social networking sites: Visitors spend an average of 6.75 hours on the site each month – nearly twice the amount of time spent on Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn, and GooglePlus combined. (tweet this)
  • The percentage of Americans who have a social-networking profile has more than doubled in recent years – from 24% in 2008 to 56% in 2012. (tweet this)

FAVE REDDIT: January 18 official blackout day in opposition to SOPA

It’s official. Social web popularity giant reddit announces they will officially go dark in opposition of SOPA/PIPA on January 18,  from 8am–8pm EST (1300–0100 UTC). That means you’ll have to look elsewhere for the next Internet meme. Instead, if you visit the site you’ll find  the live video stream of the House hearing where Internet entrepreneurs and technical experts (including reddit co-founder Alexis “kn0thing” Ohanian) will be testifying. They will also showcase community initiatives like meetups to visit Congressional offices, campaigns to contact companies supporting PIPA/SOPA, and the like.

Go on with your bad selves, reddit!

Someday, (hopefully a few months from now) people will say,

In the Year of our Lord 2012, patriots of Reddit – meming and in large numbers – charged the fields of Washington. They fought like Internet poets; they fought like Redditsmen (and women), and won their freedom.

They may take our web, but they’ll never take…OUR FREEDOM. Alright. Enough with the Braveheart quotes.
