FAVE TOOL: Free privacy policy for mobile developers

In light of what just happened with Path, if you’re a mobile developer, you might want to put a privacy policy in place. This isn’t the first time there has been concerns about how mobile apps use and share personal data and it probably won’t be the last. Just don’t let it be you.

The Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) developed a plain-language policy for developers to edit and use as they see fit. It’s six pages, but don’t freak out–that’s actually a relatively small privacy document. It covers basics, like:

  • What data an app may collect (including location information, device ID, and operating system);
  • How data is being used, how a company uses information provided by users;
  • How a company might provide user information to third parties, a user’s opt out rights, data retention, general security; and
  • How the policy affects children under 13 and how changes may be made to the privacy policy.

To make it even easier for you, the document contains blue text and suggestions for what content needs to go where. Whew!

Of course, nothing is truly “free.” You need to submit your email address and complete a basic information form. The good news is it’s automatically downloaded once you hit “submit.”

Share this FAVE with developers in your life.
